What You Can Do With Your Accreditation

As a Graduate of the PHS Certified Trainers Program, you will be prepared and qualified to confidently build your business or accept a job opportunity as a specialized expert to Train Horses, Start Colts, Work with Wild/Untouched Horses, Instruct Students, or Teach Clinics in advanced, discipline-specific skillsets.

Step 1: Required Coursework

Certified Professional Horsemen must receive a Certificate of Completion in the following Required Courses:

1. Intermediate Ridden & Horse Development Course

The Intermediate Ridden & Horse Development Course teaches students the progressive hands-on training skills and knowledge necessary to advance a horse from the Foundational Skills to more refined body control that can be used to set the student and their horse up to move towards a specific discipline or style or riding. This course covers training horses In-Hand and Under Saddle (Ridden) to ensure they mentally, emotionally and physically prepared to preform the maneuvers in a way that promotes balance and healthy biomechanics.

5-Day In-Person Course

Tuition: $2500

During this course students will learn and gain experience covering:

• The PHS Intermediate & Advanced Ground Work and In-Hand Work

• The PHS Intermediate & Advanced Ridden Skills

• How to continue developing horses Physically, Mentally & Emotionally through proven science and horsemanship based approaches

• How to evaluate and progress horses using the PHS Evaluation/Grading Scale

• How to confidently and accurately develop discipline-specific daily, weekly and monthly training plans

• How to teach these intermediate skills, philosophies, approaches and knowledge to clients and students

Colt Starting Course

The Colt Starting Course teaches students the essential skillsets a horse must have on the ground through daily care and management, ground work, and under saddle to lay a solid foundation for the rest of their lives, regardless of breed, age or discipline desired. Students will learn how to confidently prepare colts to be saddled and ridden in a way that builds upon their Partnership and Purpose and later directly impacts their mental and physical ability to develop Performance.

5-Day In-Person Course

Tuition: $2500

During this course students will learn:

• Preparing colts to be saddled

• Preparing colts to be ridden
• How to safely and effectively put the first rides on a horse being started

• How to make critical decisions relating to approach, tack and other situations that arise during the colt starting process
• Working from the back of a Saddle Horse

• Hobble Training

Step 2: Selective Coursework

Certified Professional Horsemen must receive a Certificate of Completion in 3 of the following Selective Courses:

Gentling Wild Horses Course

The Gentling Wild Horses Course provides students real hands-on experience with professional guidance to working with wild, untouched, feral horses. During the course students will learn best practices to prepare the wild horses for a confident and safe life in a domesticated setting including: catching, haltering, leading, grooming, tying, trailer loading, and farrier prep.

5-Day In-Person Course

Tuition: $2500

Problem Horse Course

In the Problem Horse Course students will learn how to apply foundational management, ground work, round pen, and ridden skillsets to help horses who are experiencing "problem areas" within their training. This course helps students identify the holes in the horse's education so they can provide the horse with guidance, knowledge, and confidence to overcome issues on the ground or under saddle.

10-Day In-Person Course

Tuition: $2500

Weanlings & Yearling Handling Course

Students will gain hands-on experience working with weanlings and yearlings as they lay the foundation for each horse's future education. During this course students will help the horses build understanding and confidence with catching, haltering, leading, grooming, and trailer loading to set them up for success in daily domesticated life and their future careers as ridden horses.

Step 3: Testing

Upon completing the Coursework students are eligible to participate in the Certified Professional Horseman's Testing. This test is hosted in-person at the PHS facility and includes both a hands-on evaluation with horses AND a written examination covering advanced and specialized horse training and business development. Upon passing the testing phase, students are awarded as a PHS Certified Professional Horseman.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I get accepted, what happens next?

Upon your Acceptance into the PHS Certified Horseman's Program, an Enrollment Agreement outlining the Program requirements will be emailed to you to review and sign, signifying your commitment to the Program. A $1500 Enrollment Payment is due along with your signed Enrollment Agreement. This Enrollment Payment covers the cost of your Accredited Trainers Testing fees, ability to enroll in PHS Courses at a reduced cost, and access to Priority Registration for all Courses.

As a student can I get additional in-person help outside of the courses?

Yes! Students enrolled in the Accredited Trainers program can attend ‘Training Weeks’ at PHS where they can come in and get help with specific things they need guidance on.

Do I have to have my own horse?

As a student you are welcome and encouraged to bring up to two (2) of your own horses at no additional cost. If you are unable to bring your own, you must let us know in advance so we can make arrangements to have horses available for you during the courses.

Is lodging provided during the courses?

Lodging is not provided in your course tuition costs. We can provide RV hookup options for an additional fee on a first-come-first-serve basis. There are also several nearby Airbnbs, campsites, and hotels within 15 minutes of PHS.

Are meals provided during the courses?

Students should plan on covering all their meals during their time at the PHS for the selected course. There will be times when PHS will host lunches/dinners for students and that will be arranged and communicated on a case-by-case basis.

How long does this program take to complete?

The program is designed to be completed within 9 months. Students may take longer if needed but may not exceed up to 18 months to complete.
